Have We Seen Your Cat Lately?

Wicomico Veterinary Hospital wants to
see more cats, more often!

(Salisbury, MD) (6/17/2011) — There are 82 million pet cats in the U.S., compared with 72 million dogs(1), making cats the most popular pet. Yet studies show the number of feline veterinary visits is declining steadily each year. For example, a recent industry survey revealed that compared with dogs, almost three times as many cats hadn’t received veterinary care in the past year(2).

The disparity may be related to common myths about cat health, such as:
• Cats are naturally healthier and more problem-free than dogs
• Feline health problems come from outside and don’t affect indoor cats
• Cats will display visible signs of illness like dogs do

The truth is, cats need regular veterinary care, including annual exams and vaccinations, just like dogs do. And because they are naturally adept at hiding signs of illness, annual exams are especially important for early diagnosis of health problems.

That’s why Wicomico Veterinary Hospital is participating in the “Have we seen your cat lately?™” national awareness campaign and taking steps to raise awareness about the importance of regular veterinary care for cats. Wicomico Veterinary Hospital has a feline-ONLY exam room with pheromone diffusers, garden views and plenty of feline literature. Our technicians use gentle hands and calm voices to keep your cat as comfortable as possible while away from home. Pheromone spray can be sprayed in and on the cat's carrier one half hour before you need to travel to the hospital, this can help reduce stress associated with the carrier and the car ride. We recommend keeping cat carriers out ALL the time so it doesn't become a threat; it's just part of their normal surroundings. This really makes the carrier a safe place and much less stressful for the cat and cat owner when having to take a trip into the veterinary hospital.

“The team at Wicomico Veterinary Hospital strives to make feline visits as comfortable and as stress-free as possible for the pet and their owners,” said Jessie Mudge, BS, RVT.

Wicomico Veterinary Hospital encourages all cat owners to call their veterinarians
to schedule wellness exams for their cats.
